Vision: Educational Victories=Economic Strength
The mission of the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (SVHEC) is to advance southern Virginia’s economic potential through education, innovation, and collaboration.
For more than 30 years, the SVHEC has been helping people in Southern Virginia transform their lives by harnessing the power of education. Through a unique partnership with community colleges and state universities, we are able to provide convenient, affordable access to a wide range of college and career training opportunities right here in South Boston, VA. We also provide short-term, hands-on credential based training in information technology, mechatronics, welding, and work ready foundations to help you go from zero to career in less than a year.
Regardless of where you are on your educational journey – just getting started, making a career change, pursuing a 2 or 4-year degree, seeking short-term training and credentials to get you into the workforce, or completing that unfinished master’s or doctoral degree – there is an opportunity waiting for you here.
The SVHEC has been providing affordable access to education since 1986 when we began operations out of a modest 500 square-foot mobile unit on the grounds of the local high school. Since that time we’ve become a state agency (2005), and now operate out of two re-purposed tobacco warehouses donated by local benefactors and renovated with community bonds, private donations, historic tax credits and various state and federal grants.
Today, we provide 100,000 square feet of technically sophisticated space including high-tech classrooms and labs featuring advanced machining and simulation technology focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and Healthcare (STEM-H).
From GED to PhD, you can get it at the SVHEC. That’s why our motto is Opportunity Lives Here. If you’re ready to start or continue your educational journey, we have helpful, compassionate people waiting to help. Take the next step--Call 434-572-5566.
