Welding
Welding is a growing field – in Southern Virginia and beyond. If you’re ready for a hands-on career, the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (SVHEC) is ready for you. Welding@SVHEC is a short-term, accredited training program providing students with instruction in MIG, TIG, Stick, and Pipe welding. In less than one year, we’ll prepare you to be a work-ready welder. This training program is accredited by the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) and also prepares you to test for American Welding Society credentials in SVHEC’s AWS Accredited Test Facility. These 3rd party-validated industry credentials are recognized by employers across the nation, and will demonstrate to employers that you have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to do the job. Financial assistance for training is available.
About Welding@SVHEC
This non-credit, hands-on training program takes individuals with no prior weld experience and makes you job ready in less than a year. Our career track welding program can train you as a work-ready welder in just eight months. We also offer advanced and specialty courses in pipe and aluminum welding so you can continue growing your skills and advancing your welding career.
The key to our success is plenty of hands-on practice in our modern welding lab. We teach you WHAT to do and HOW to do it. We also cover employability skills, resume writing, and interviewing skills to ensure your success in the workforce.
In-demand skills acquired include:
- Welding safety and quality
- Welding symbols and detail drawing
- Oxyfuel, plasma arc, and air carbon cutting and goughing
- Arc welding equipment and setup
- SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, and FCAW training
Welding@SVHEC training will prepare you for a wide variety of jobs, including:
- Structural Welder
- Pipe Welder
- Welding Machine Operator
- Fabricator
Program eligibility:
- 18-years-old or older
- High school diploma or GED
- Valid form of ID
- Attend one information session
