The five-hour training provided participants with an overview of Telehealth and an opportunity to gain hands-on knowledge and skills using video-conferencing in a clinical setting, and remote patient monitoring in a home setting. Individuals who completed the entire training received certification as a Telehealth Technologist.

According to the National Telehealth Policy Resource Center (https://www.cchpca.org/about/about-Telehealth), Telehealth “encompasses a broad variety of technologies and tactics to deliver virtual medical, health, and education services.” Telehealth can include a live video chat with a doctor located in a different city, wearing a medical device that transmits readings to your physician, or even using a fitness tracking device like a FitBit.

“The Telehealth Training was offered to clinicians, health care providers, and health professions students to promote the initiative of using advanced technology to support the needs of diverse patients and underserved communities,” said Ferren Pannell, Manager of SVHEC-AHEC and Center of Nursing Excellence.

“From this training, I gained a new outlook of healthcare and how rapidly it is changing,” said Community Health Worker Malelia Tucker.

“As a nurse, I understand the value of Telehealth, and how it enables health care providers to expand the delivery of health care services and potentially increase care accessibility to others. SVHEC-AHEC is grateful to Brian Gunnell, Senior Video Unified Communication Engineer & Technology Innovation Strategist with the University of Virginia Health System for conducting the training. We hope to offer additional training opportunities in the near future,” Pannell continued.
