Automated Systems Technology

Automation is all around us. From our homes and hospitals to small businesses and large industrial corporations, automated systems are seamlessly integrated into our daily lives. The use of connected devices known as the “Internet of Things,” continues to grow as businesses connect an increasing number of devices and sensors. With this growth comes great career opportunity for skilled individuals who can understand, connect, troubleshoot, and repair these integrated systems.

The Automated Systems Technology program at the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (SVHEC) prepares you for a host of opportunities through our short term, non-credit training. In a few short weeks, we will teach you the fundamentals of electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic systems, and give you the skills you need to make an immediate impact in the workplace. Because training is not limited to specific industries, students are prepared for careers across industry sectors from healthcare and IT to manufacturing and robotics.

Career Pathway or A la Carte

For individuals who want to start a career in industrial maintenance or automated systems, enroll in a three-course series focused on either electrical or mechanical skills. Each class may be completed in about one month’s time and leads to certification from the Smart Automation Certification Alliance (SACA).

Individuals with prior experience in industrial maintenance and automated systems who want to gain new skills may take classes a la carte in key topics such as electrical systems, mechanical systems, programmable controllers, robotics operations, and more.

Certification

All training leads to certification through the Smart Automation Certification Alliance (SACA)–the certification program developed by industry for industry. SACA micro-certifications allow a person to take the course and then sit for the silver and gold level certification tests (both written and hands-on tests) in under 55 hours of time. This provides opportunities for an a-la-carte style of learning so you gain the skills you need when you need them.

Customized Training

Automated Systems Technology training modules may be customized for specific, targeted training outcomes for our regional employers. SVHEC’s workforce development staff partners with employers to learn about their training needs, and then develops a unique training solution that will provide identified outcomes. We work with small, medium, and large employers and will train your employees on your schedule.
