In response to industry demands, the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center’s IT Academy is expanding its program offerings with new courses in computer programming and data analytics.
Intro to Computer Programming will introduce students to basic concepts of programming using the C and Python programming languages. Students will learn the fundamentals of computer programming through instruction reinforced with hands-on skills practice. During the 16-week class, students will develop several programs demonstrating their understanding of programming concepts and practical applications.
The C programming language is widely used and powers many of the devices and technologies we use on a daily basis. Python is also a valuable skillset because of its key role in scripting and automation. Students in this course will test for the Python Institute PCEP Certified Entry-Level Python Programmer certification.
Intro to Computer Programming begins on August 22nd, and will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30pm-8:00pm. The class is open to anyone who has previously taken an IT Academy course.
With CompTIA Data+, the IT Academy is expanding into courses for business professionals. This new course offering focuses on data analytics and is geared towards helping business professionals better analyze, interpret, and present data. The goal of the course is to enhance the student’s ability to understand data and use it to make data-driven decisions. Individuals who work in a wide variety of roles—from executive administration and finance to program managers and marketing professionals—will benefit from CompTIA Data+.
In the CompTIA Data+ course, students will learn data concepts and environments, develop data mining skills, and learn to apply appropriate statistical methods. Students will also be introduced to data governance and quality control, and will gain skills in data visualization so they can better translate data into appropriate reports, dashboards, and other graphical representations. To be successful, students need to be proficient in Microsoft Excel.
CompTIA Data+ begins on September 5th and will meet on Tuesdays from 5:30pm-8:30pm. In addition, students will be expected to complete approximately 2 1/2hrs of independent study per week.
