The IT Academy offers short-term, hands-on training leading to CompTIA certifications. In addition to CompTIA A+/Server+, this spring the ITA will offer two new courses: IT Fundamentals+ and Linux+.

IT Fundamentals+ is an introductory course designed for individuals with no prior IT training or experience. The class will allow trainees to test out the IT field without taking the full CompTIA A+/Server+ course. For individuals who decide to pursue the full A+/Server+ training and certification, IT Fundamentals+ will provide them with the background needed to be successful.

The IT Academy’s new Linux+ course is dedicated to the Linux operating system, and will provide instruction on troubleshooting and diagnostics, system operation and maintenance, and system configuration. Training leads to the CompTIA Linux+ certification. According to CompTIA’s website, “CompTIA Linux+ is the only job-focused Linux certification covering the latest foundational skills demanded by hiring managers.” This class is intended for individuals with A+ certification or Linux administration experience.

“We paid attention to what our trainees told us when we chose our next course offerings, and I believe they will add an important new dimension to our program,” said Kelly Shotwell, director of the SVHEC IT Academy. “I expect both courses to be in high demand.”Image of the IT Academy's Repair Center Training Space

The IT Academy pairs classroom instruction and online study tools with hands-on activities in a fully equipped repair center and data center to simulate the real-world working environment. CompTIA A+/Server+ participants complete the entire core curriculum within four months, and have the training and skills necessary to start, or advance, their career as an IT technician.
“The IT Academy gave me the ability to actualize my plans of gaining solid and worthwhile knowledge in the tech industry," said Abdullah Bell, ITA cohort 6 completer. “With the information I learned from the IT Academy, I now have multiple paths to kickstart a career in the IT industry.”

For Cheri S. Adkins, ITA cohort 7 completer, two valuable aspects of the program are “that evening classes are offered and financial assistance is available.” After completing the A+/Server+ course, both Bell and Adkins continued their IT training by taking the Network+ and Security+ courses.

A number of program completers have gone on to work at the datacenters in Clarksville and Boydton, as well as regional school systems and various other businesses and industries. Individuals who were already employed in an IT career were able to obtain the credentials they needed to advance their careers.

All persons interested in enrolling in the A+/Server+ or IT Fundamentals+ course must attend an information session, which will cover the ITA application process, skills learned during training, and available financial assistance. Dates for upcoming information sessions are:

• Thursday, November 7th at 5:30pm

Information sessions are open to the public, but registration is required. To register for an information session or to learn more about the IT Academy contact Kelly Shotwell, Director of IT Academy@SVHEC, at kellyshotwell@svhec.org, 434-572-5660, and toll free 1-800-283-0098 ext 5660.
